Dealing With the Humidity in Houston

Living in Houston, you know to expect humidity almost all year round. The proximity to the Gulf of Mexico brings in warm, moisture-heavy air that settles over the city for most of the year, and summer is when it hits hardest.

Your air conditioner is designed to remove excess humidity from the air as part of the cooling process, so when your system is working the way it should, comfort and dehumidification go hand in hand. But if your air conditioner is dealing with internal issues, it’ll struggle to actually remove any humidity, even if it’s still running.

 

What Causes an AC to Run All Day, But Not Remove Humidity?

Short Cycling

Your air conditioner kicks on, runs for just a few minutes, and then shuts off. Then, it does it again… and again. When this happens, your home isn’t actually going to cool down or get rid of excess humidity because your system never runs long enough for that gradual moisture-removal process to happen.

Dehumidification isn’t instant; instead, it happens steadily as air passes over your AC’s cold evaporator coil during a full cooling cycle. The longer that cycle runs, the more moisture gets pulled out of the air. Short cycling cuts that process off before it can really get going, so you end up with quick blasts of cool air but little to no improvement in how sticky or damp your home feels.

 

Clogged Air Filters

Every HVAC system is built with air filters designed to pull dirt, dust, and other contaminants out of the air supply before the air is redistributed throughout the home. The more your system runs, the more contaminants that’ll enter your filters and cause clogs that significantly reduce airflow.

When airflow gets restricted like this, your evaporator coil doesn’t get enough air passing over it to properly absorb heat and moisture. That means your system has to work harder and run longer just to reach your set temperature, all while keeping your AC from ever effectively pulling humidity out of the air.

 

Low Refrigerant or Refrigerant Leaks

Refrigerant is what actually absorbs heat and moisture from the air inside your home as it cycles through your system. When levels drop below what your AC is designed to run on, usually the result of a slow leak somewhere in the line set or coil, your system loses much of its ability to cool and dehumidify effectively. 

Unfortunately, running your AC longer won’t fix this issue, since low refrigerant means there’s simply less capacity to pull heat and moisture out of the air, no matter how long the system stays on.

 

Thermostat Setting Issues

Many modern thermostats are set to “Auto” fan mode by default, which only runs the blower while the system is actively cooling. Some homeowners switch this to “On” thinking it’ll improve comfort, but that keeps the fan running even when the compressor isn’t, blowing air across a coil that’s no longer cold enough to remove moisture, and in some cases even reintroducing humidity back into your home that the coil had already collected.

 

Ductwork Issues

Leaky or poorly insulated ductwork, especially in attics or crawl spaces during a Houston summer, can let hot, humid outside air mix with your cooled air before it ever reaches your living space. 

Even if your system itself is working perfectly, that added moisture entering through gaps or disconnected sections means your home never quite reaches the comfort level your thermostat suggests it should.

 

What to Check Before Calling the Professionals

Some air conditioning problems are best left to the professionals, while others can be safely checked and resolved on your own before scheduling a service call. Checking the air filters and verifying thermostat fan settings are two of the easiest, yet most important, things you can do for your AC before ever calling a professional.

For your air filter, take it out of your system and hold it up to the light. If you can’t see any light passing through the filter,  it’s time for a replacement. A clean filter is one of the easiest ways to restore airflow and give your system a better shot at removing humidity effectively.

When it comes to your thermostat settings, make sure your fan is set to “auto” instead of “on”. In areas with high humidity, like Houston, setting the fan to “auto” will make sure it only runs when your system is actively cooling, rather than blowing air across a coil that isn’t cold enough to pull moisture out.
